Everything you need to know about airsoft!

If you've ever wondered, "What is airsoft?" — you're in the right place. Whether you’ve heard about it from a friend, seen a video online, or just stumbled upon it while looking for something new and exciting to do, this blog post will explain everything you need to know about airsoft. From what it is, how it works, what gear you need, to where you can play — we’ve got you covered.

What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a competitive team shooting sport that involves participants eliminating opponents by hitting them with spherical plastic BBs launched from replica airsoft guns. These airsoft guns are designed to closely resemble real firearms, both in appearance and function, but they shoot non-lethal, 6mm plastic BBs.

Airsoft can be played in various formats — from organized military simulations (MilSim) and tactical scenario games, to fast-paced skirmishes at indoor and outdoor airsoft fields.  I always tell people it's like playing real life Call of Duty or similar video games.

How is Airsoft Different from Paintball?

A common question we get is: “Is airsoft like paintball?”

The answer: Yes and no.

  • Ammo: Airsoft uses small plastic BBs, while paintball uses large, paint-filled balls.
  • Gear: Airsoft guns look and feel more like real firearms. Paintball markers are bulkier.
  • Tactics: Airsoft tends to attract players interested in military realism, strategy, and immersive gameplay.
  • Pain Factor: Airsoft BBs generally hurt less than paintballs and don’t leave a mess.

Who Can Play Airsoft?

Airsoft is a fun and safe activity for all ages, though most fields recommend a minimum age of 10 or 12. It’s perfect for:

  • Teens looking for an exciting outdoor hobby
  • Adults who enjoy tactical gear or military-style games
  • Groups seeking unique birthday parties or team-building activities
  • Families who want a fun and active way to spend time together

Our field, Robinhood Adventure Park, welcomes players of all experience levels — from total beginners to seasoned airsoft veterans.

What Equipment Do You Need for Airsoft?

To get started, you don’t need to break the bank. At a minimum, you’ll need:

1. Airsoft Gun (AEG, Gas Blowback, or Spring-Powered)

  • Most new players start with an Automatic Electric Gun (AEG) for its ease of use.
  • These guns shoot BBs at 300-400 FPS (feet per second) and offer semi and full auto modes.

2. BBs (Ammo)

  • Use high-quality, BBs (some outdoor fields, but not ours, require them).
  • Available in different weights — 0.20g all the way up to .43g, the heavier you use the more accurate they will be.  You are just trading accuracy for speed.

3. Eye Protection

  • ANSI-rated full-seal goggles or face masks are mandatory for safety.
  • Many players opt for full-face protection, especially younger players.

4. Tactical Gear (Optional)

  • Chest rigs, plate carriers, camouflage clothing, and helmets enhance the experience.
  • Most gear is optional for beginners — just bring comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes.

Don’t have your own gear? No problem. East Coast Airsoft offers affordable rental packages at our field, so you can try the sport before investing in your own equipment.

chronograph test before entering the field.

A: Walk-ons are welcome on open play days, but we recommend booking in advance for private groups or parties.
